Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi is a non-controversial man with a good reputation built
over the years through sheer strength of character, dedication, courage and leadership
qualities. He joined the Youth Congress in 1976 and since then has been totally
dedicated to the public and also to the welfare of the general public. As the representative
of a party holding key positions from time to time, he has played a key role on
many important occasions.
His humility and values of social service instilled in him due to the nature of
his family background have helped him secure a respectable position as a leader.
His generosity and benevolence are recognized and appreciated by all he knows. Development
of infrastructure, Health, Education, Employment and Women Empowerment has been
the major issues of concern which have been addressed by him from time to time.
He has many major initiatives in the above areas to his credit. He has striven hard
for his constituency and has been able to provide several benefits and amenities
to the Border Belt to which he belongs.
His vision encompasses the overall development of the state though empowerment of
its people. Under his able guidance and leadership, his constituency has developed
by leaps and bounds. There has been multi dimensional growth owing to his youthful
energy and innovativeness in thought.
His active interest in sports makes him the only person from India who is a member
of the Commonwealth Advisory Board on Sports (CABOS). He has also earned major awards
and distinctions in sports himself and has held key positions. He is the President
(Chandigarh Olympic Association), Vice President(Indian Olympic Association),
Sr. Vice President (Fencing Association of India), and Vice President (National
Rifle Association of India). He is also a member of the 2010 Commonwealth Games
Organizing Committee. He has earned the love and support of the masses and has been
able to instill trust, faith and hope in them for a better future. His is a classic
example of growth from the grass root level to a great and visionary leader.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
He belongs to the Kshatriya family which is the direct descendant of the 4th Guru
of the Sikhs, Guru Ram Das Ji. His family commands respect across the state of Punjab,
especially in Ferozepur District and rest of South Punjab due to their religious
background. The family has a considerable following in all the communities of the
region. His immense respect for spiritual and religious leaders makes him one of
the most admired leaders in the state.

2007: Re Elected to Punjab Legislative Assembly from Guru Har Sahai with one of
the largest margins amongst the Congress MLAs
2007: Re Appointed as Chief Whip of Punjab CLP
